5. You have a powerful computer
You have a powerful computer as well as the necessary software and a fast Internet connection.
A powerful computer – with lots of hard disk space and more than enough RAM – gives you the capability to download big files or process live audio and/or video without the system slowing down and causing you to lose valuable time.
A good rule of thumb for working-at-home technology is that you should have a system that is at least comparable to your system at work.
Also, your Internet connection must be premium quality. If you work for a large organization, you will probably be signing into VPN (virtual private network) software. Whatever the specifics of the connection method, it’s absolutely essential to have high-speed Internet service in your home.
Finally, make sure that you have all the standard software – in terms of operating system and office suite – that any company would expect you to have.
Beyond that, you can assume that your company will supply you with special software, especially if the price of the programs is prohibitive.
Assure your boss that you have taken care of the technological angle of the work-at-home scenario.
That removes one possible obstacle to approving your request, and it demonstrates that you’re serious about doing everything that needs to be done to make the proposal work.
