Persuade Your Boss to Let You Work from Home

3. The company will save on overhead

Company will save on overhead because they won’t need to supply you with a fully-loaded workstation. This is an argument that strikes home for every corporation that watches the bottom line!

The data demonstrates that your company can save a bundle by not providing you with a place to work. In fact, the wealth management firm Merrill Lynch estimates the cost of providing a workstation to one office employee as $5,000 to $6,000 annually.

Some big corporations are confirming that their savings have been huge. The health insurer Aetna reported that it cut real estate costs by $78 million after implementing a work-at-home option. The telecommunications giant AT&T made a similar announcement, stating that it reduced its office space costs by 50 percent!

While there are a few companies swimming against the tide, the trend among employers in this country – both large and small – is to encourage those employees who are able to work off-site to do so. This is part of a transformation of work that’s been made possible by the connectivity of the Internet. Both the employee and the employer benefit from this transformation – the employee by cutting the commute out of his or her lifestyle, and the employer by cutting some real estate costs out of the budget.
