Freelance Writing From Home: 7 Ways to Increase Productivity

Taking-notes

3. Create a basic outline and do the bulk of your research before you do the serious writing

[div class=”ads-right”] [end-div]Your outline might be nothing more than four of five lines of notes to yourself, to be fleshed out later. The mistake many writers make is to expect to “just be able to sit down and write.”

They write half a paragraph, go on the Internet to check a fact, come back to their text, start to think about grocery shopping, write another line or two, then realize they should have structured the piece differently to begin with, and start all over.

This is a very inefficient way to write. Create an outline, either on your notepad or on your computer. You can even type it at the bottom of what will eventually be your finished article. It’s easy to delete all your messy notes later.

Next, go online and do your research – preferably all of it. Switching back and forth between your text page and half a dozen websites will slow you down tremendously. A more streamlined process is to outline, research, and then write.

Don’t mix the three tasks up in a haphazard mishmash of effort – separate them as cleanly as you can, and complete them in the correct order. You will be amazed how much quicker you can complete a writing job when you follow this simple process.
