Once your employer catches wind that you have another means of income, they may begin to imagine all sorts of things. Many will begin to wonder how loyal you are to their company.

After all, they’ll suppose, if you were loyal, you would pour all your energy into your position and moving up the ladder within their company.

Many people take side jobs because the occupation is something of a hobby. For instance, a corporate executive may simply enjoy the fitness enhancement and stress relief that comes with doing aerobics.

After doing aerobics some years, the health club or fitness center may approach this person to instruct because they need someone to fulfill an opening. Often side jobs come about just like that. People just fall into them and they complement some aspect of their lives.

On the other hand, perhaps you do not feel particularly loyal to an employer and have good reason to check out other means of income. There’s nothing wrong with protecting yourself by building a safety net. If your company is experiencing job cuts, it makes sense to explore other options in case you get laid off. Loyalty is always a two-way street. Many employers demand loyalty without genuinely offering it in return.
