Working From Home: Multitasking Taken To The Next Level

Traditional workplace at the office of the company you work for involves multitasking on the business level – checking your e-mail, communicating, conferencing, delegating and actually working.

On the other hand, when working from home multitasking can take on an entirely different meaning simply because you’re at home.

Being at home for most of the day implies being able to put together a quick meal for you and your family members, toss a laundry batch into the washing machine, feed and walk the pets and even go grocery shopping.

In reality, working from home can be more challenging and time consuming than actually commuting to and from work every day. That’s why this type of work often requires more discipline than others.

Discipline is absolutely key. Discipline to get up in the morning and put on clothes, not work from the comforts of one’s bed. Discipline to spend hours on end just working, not cooking, cleaning, feeding and so on. Discipline to prioritize and first do the work you have and then do all the other things that you’d otherwise do in the afternoon after returning home from the office, if that were the case.

Not being able to prioritize can turn into a nightmare with missed deadlines, burnt meat loaf, smelly cat litter and hungry family. That’s why working from home should primarily be working, with 5-10 minute breaks spent doing little chores around the house that don’t require tons of time. Once the work is finished other tasks on the daily to-do-list become the first concern.
