When you begin a writing endeavor or make writing part of the way you earn a living, you must banish even the thought of writer’s block. Yet for many writers, it can be difficult to work past the inspirational blocks.

Writers can take control of this issue, however, with a few tips. By relying upon a strong work ethic and a commitment to write at all costs, you can push writer’s block from your life once and for all.

Don’t wait for inspiration

Think of writing inspiration as cab fare and you, the writer, as the cab. You have to be on the road, so to speak, and already hard at work writing to catch that fare. If you are parked in the lot awaiting inspiration to tap on your door, it might be a long wait. Instead, make a schedule and stick to it at all costs. Writers write, writers don’t wait. The more you write on a regular basis, the less writer’s block will play a role in your writing life.

Write the draft

If you are stranded for great ideas, simply work on a good one – even a mediocre one.

The trick to conquer writer’s block is to write the draft. You can’t concentrate on perfection when it comes to that initial draft either.

The most important thing to understand is that writing is a process and often the real magic doesn’t even happen until you get to that revision stage.

Until then, you have to piece that draft together even on days you don’t feel like writing.

Avoid distractions

When it’s time to write, it’s essentially time to get to work. This means turning off the cell phone and television. Sometimes it may mean going somewhere that you can be alone to write for a prescribed period of time.

Writing is work and it does require a strong work ethic. Procrastination is an enemy and can feed your writer’s block. Instead, just dive into the writing and treat it like your job. You’ll find that in time you won’t have any time to waste on writer’s block having learned to work effectively around it.
